Natural remedies for diarrhea

 Natural remedies for diarrhea

Diarrhea is more of a symptom than an illness, and usually lasts no more than two days. However, it is still particularly troublesome, especially due to the abundant and liquid stools it causes. Here are 5 natural ways to treat it.

Avoid junk foods and focus on soluble fiber

When diarrhea is not attributable to a chronic illness, diarrhea can be followed by ingestion of substances that are not absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract (eg fructose) or excessive secretion of water due to the presence of a toxin (eg bacteria). It is not recommended to use a medicinal substance to combat it. On the other hand, it is possible to reduce its effects to better support it and avoid dehydration through food.

Ask about foods rich in soluble fiber

Contrary to popular belief, not all foods rich in fiber should be neglected in case of diarrhea. Soluble fiber, unlike insoluble fiber, has the ability to retain some water in the intestines, allowing stools to become more consistent. Among the best sources of soluble fiber are passion fruit, beans (black or red), soybeans, psyllium, avocado, or even oranges.

Avoid irritating foods

Conversely, foods rich in insoluble fiber such as wheat grains, wheat bran, whole grains, most vegetables (especially when raw), seeds and nuts should be avoided. Foods likely to cause flatulence should also be avoided: think for example cabbage, onions, leeks, garlic, legumes and soft drinks. Coffee, tea, alcohol, and spices are other troublesome foods to avoid.

To avoid dehydration, it is recommended to drink often and in small quantities (about 2 liters per day). Here's an oral rehydration solution for your hands:

360 ml (12 oz) pure, unsweetened orange juice

600 ml of cooled boiled water

2.5 ml (12 teaspoons) salt

Use astringent plants in herbal tea

Herbal medicine can be helpful for simple diarrhea. Special mention should be made of astringent plants, such as potentilla, tortilla, bearberry, ginger or blackberry. However, the blueberry (myrtillus pollen) seems to be unanimous: this small blue-violet berry with a sweet flavour, would be a remarkably effective intestinal antibacterial. Its therapeutic effect will be attributed to the natural astringent of its pigments, anthocyanosides. They are also used fairly dry because the acids they contain have an irritating effect. It should be noted that black currants and raspberries contain the same type of dyes.

Some authors have also reported the effectiveness of seawater, especially in diarrhea in infants (one vial of marine plasma per day).

Ginger tea (Zingiber officinale)

Dip 0.5 to 1 g of ginger powder or 5 g of fresh grated ginger in 150 ml of boiling water.

Let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes.

Drink 2 to 4 cups a day.

Bramble herbal tea

Bring about 200ml of water to a boil and then add 1.5g of bramble leaves (ie 2 teaspoons).

Leave to infuse for ten minutes.

Drink 3 cups a day in case of diarrhea.

Bearberry boiled

Boil 200 ml of water with 6 g of bearberry leaves.

Once boiling, boil for another 10 minutes.

Gradually add a little water to compensate for the evaporation of the water.

Strain it and drink it at a rate of 3 cups a day.

boiled blueberry

Immerse 30 to 60 g of dried fruit in 1 liter of cold water.

Bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer for 10 minutes.

Strain while hot and then leave to cool.

Drink up to 6 cups daily if needed.

Audacity Homeopathy

How to relieve it depends on very specific factors, such as its source (food poisoning, emotional trauma, stress, unhealthy water, virus?) or the symptoms it causes (pain, cramps, sweating, nausea?). However, there are "recipes" for emergencies such as diarrhea. Here are some of them:

Arsenic owls: Taken in case of diarrhea caused by spoiled food or contaminated water. The person is usually restless, very sensitive to cold, and needs water frequently. However, his condition gets worse after eating or drinking.

Nux vomica: Taken when diarrhea is caused by poor diet (too fatty) or drug use (alcohol for example). The person is sensitive to cold, irritable and wakes up frequently at night.

Veratrum album: It is taken in case of painful and exhausting diarrhea accompanied by vomiting.

Podophyllum: To be taken in case of immediate diarrhea at the end of each meal. The person does not feel the need to drink and is very weak after each attack.

Quina: Taken in the case of yellow and painless diarrhea. The person usually has a distended abdomen.

Colosynthes: It is taken in the presence of very painful colic, and it disappears with the slightest pressure.

Mercurius corrosivus: It is taken in case of diarrhea accompanied by burning stool, even if it is accompanied by blood, with a nauseating smell. A person sweats profusely and feels bad after defecation.

It is highly recommended to consult a homeopathic doctor for proper homeopathic treatment. In any case, if diarrhea persists after two days, a consultation with a health professional is imperative.

Choose probiotics

Their name sounds like antibiotics, but they do not have much in common. Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that make up the intestinal flora. The latest research agrees that taking probiotics can prevent and treat diarrhea more quickly, especially when it is associated with a virus (most gastroenteritis) or bacteria (eg as part of torista) 1-3 .

Be careful, for probiotics to be most effective, it is important that they remain "alive" in the intestine. But the stomach kills about 90% because of its acidity! That is why products in enteric-coated capsules, designed to dissolve in the intestine, are more desirable.

Lactobacilli are the most recommended probiotics4. To get it and know the appropriate dosage, it is preferable to go to the pharmacist. It is also found in yogurt but its effect will depend specifically on the bacterial strain used in its manufacture 5-6 .

Consider clay to fight diarrhea

Many medicines use mud to counteract bouts of diarrhea 1 . Also, a number of health professionals recommend it for physical therapy. Its ability to increase the body's ability to exchange makes it easier to eliminate toxins responsible for diarrhea 2-4 .

There are different types of clay. The most common green clay, it is used in bouts of diarrhea. It is better to buy it in powder, because it will be more convenient to use. Simply mix a small amount of clay (1 teaspoon) with water, mix well and then drink the resulting drink. It is possible to heat the mixture to make it more pleasant to drink.

Brewer's yeast

Brewer's yeast has the ability to rejuvenate the intestinal flora thanks to its antibacterial properties. It restores balance by acting as a probiotic and thus fights diarrhea of bacterial origin and gastroenteritis.

You should choose active brewer's yeast which, unheated, unleavened, dried only, has probiotic properties, unlike inactive brewer's yeast.

Lemon juice

Lemon can work on acute diarrhea.

It is necessary to dilute the juice of half a lemon in a large glass of hot water and drink up to 3 glasses a day until the symptoms stop. Honey can be added to reduce acidity.

During the winter period, this drink can also be drunk for the prevention of gastroenteritis, every evening before bedtime.

certain foods

Some foods slow down transit. This is particularly the case with rice. After drinking the cooking juice in the acute phase, it can be taken as the first food to be re-introduced after a period of fasting. Pasta and potatoes can also be on the menu.

For dessert, opt for banana or apple juice instead.
