6 tips to maintain your fitness goals this summer
For many athletes, summer is the main event. The season we sweat in is fall, winter and spring. Well, not in our world. We all know the summer body myth, but we might as well maintain a healthy body all year long. We chose to keep fit in the summer because it is good for us and helps us enjoy more in these warmer months.
We don't live on the planet Zorg, so we also know how tempting it is to skip this workout to lounging in the pool and drinking cocktails. Of course, we can always do that, but if you really want to maintain your fitness goals over the summer, we need to talk about balance, planning, and all the other tips we give you.
Tips to maintain our fitness goals during the summer
1 - Set achievable goals
First of all, you cannot maintain goals if they are not achievable. This is valid for summer or any season of the year. For summer in particular, keep in mind that this is a time for fun and relaxation. Summer vacation doesn't have to involve endless hours of exercise, but that doesn't mean you have to stop exercising completely. As with most things in life, balance is key.
2 - Follow a plan
Maintaining our fitness goals during the summer requires a plan. This also has to be realistic. If you are busier during the summer months, it is imperative that you take this into account. By planning your workouts, you give your brain a commitment and it is more likely to stick to your goals. Write it down on the calendar or as an alert on your phone to say, say, at 6 p.m. that day, it's HIIT training. Again, a personal trainer or workout buddy can help you stay accountable.
3 - Drink more fluids (choose wisely!)
the weather is hot. Needless to say, it's easier to risk getting dehydrated, especially if you exercise outside (additional note: avoid training between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. if you want to avoid peak temperatures). So increase your water consumption and try to reduce your caffeine intake. Sodas and sodas may tempt us during the summer month, but those empty calories and high-sugar temptations can quickly negate positive efforts.
4 - Include exercises as quickly as possible
Are you going on vacation this year? Enjoy! We won't ask you to do a burpee to get to the beach. However, there are ways to exercise while on vacation without sacrificing rest time. Many of the getaways include hiking opportunities, beach games such as volleyball or Frisbee, and plenty of water sports such as swimming or surfing. Other more sneaky ways to increase your physical activity during the holidays might include:
- Take luggage to your room by yourself
- Stairs instead of the elevator
- Go pick up your room service orders
- Walk while spending time with your family
- You can walk or cycle instead of taking a bus, metro or taxi to reach your destination
5 - Try quick workouts
Your muscles and joints become more flexible in the summer, which means less time to warm up. This also means that you can perform faster exercises such as high intensity interval training or high resistance training, burning the maximum calories in half the time and allowing you to enjoy the rest of your summer activities.
6- Join the gym
Summer gyms are heaven on earth: air-conditioned, never crowded, and have all the equipment we need for a great workout.
